ABOUT HARLEM HIGH SCHOOL

Harlem History

Harlem High School's historical background goes back to 1857, when Andrew J. Sanders donated land to build Harlem Baptist Church , Harlem Methodist Church and Harlem High School.  The town of Harlem was founded on October 24, 1870 and annexed two surrounding settlements ( Saw Dust and Cerlastae) over the next twenty-four years.  The community of Berzelia merged with Harlem in 1933.  Harlem High School, Home of the Bulldogs, opened its doors in 1871.  Over the years through slow community growth, Harlem has remained a small family-oriented community.  Today the community is best known as the birth place of comedian, Olivier Hardy (1892).
